The Artful Poet
(Instructor: Bruce Niedt)
Art and poetry have co-existed for thousands of years. On many occasions, poets written about works of art that have inspired them, including paintings, sculpture and photography. There's even a word for it: "ekphrastic" poetry. In this workshop, we will read examples of ekphrastic poems from some well-known poets. We will also participate in an art project or two (like rock painting), and a stroll around the Eilendarts Gallery to look for sources of inspiration. You will be invited to write a short poem as a response or impression of one of the works of art and/or your own in-class art project. If you have ever written a poem about a work of art, bring it to class (along with a copy of the art work itself) to share if
you like. Come and get inspired!
