Yoga Foundations
With Amy Bartholomew, CYT
THE CLASS
Yoga Foundations is a 75 minute class that is structured to build ideal posture alignment and to introduce yoga philosophy for the student curious beyond exercise. This is a class about fundamentals and can act as a wonderful stepping stone to other yoga styles/classes.
It is perfect for those who are beginners but can certainly be adapted to those with more experience. My intention is to keep the focus on you, and to meet you where you are. (and also keep it relaxed and fun!) We will center, move, breathe, align and rest.
BEYOND ASANAS
Yoga is a subject that can extend far beyond the poses. To unplug and quiet the mind is not a natural or comfortable habit for many of us. This is precisely the reason that we seek to learn the tools and practice techniques that foster inner peace. This requires commitment, consistency and most importantly patience. A primary component of a yoga practice is self-compassion, confronting the contrarian voices in our heads. When we gather in a class, set our intentions and “show up” for ourselves, inner shifts are inevitable.
ALIGNMENT
When moving through asanas, or poses, learning to make adjustments in your stance, position or breath is part of an infinite “unfolding” both physical and energetic. Repeating poses with mindful awareness serves the mind, body and spirit. Every practice session has the ability to feel new every time, as You are New to another class, ready to begin again. The feel of a pose can continue to grow, and become more nuanced over time. Proper alignment allows for this.
BALANCE
When we practice, one of the principles that is focused upon is balance. We lengthen, strengthen and incorporate movements equally within the body. Left, right, front, back etc. We also become aware of balance within our breath as well as the balance of effort and ease with every pose.
NOTES
*Please bring a mat and any personal props that you might prefer. I will provide blankets, blocks and straps for support. It’s important to recognize that props help with alignment and body awareness and should not be viewed as ‘less than’.
*Please avoid straining/forcing in any poses, distinguish the difference between slight tension and PAIN, this is especially critical for the knees and the lower back. LISTEN to your body.
*Avoid eating a full meal before practice and hydrate as necessary
*Practicing in bare feet is recommended, it helps with grip and is our “grounding” connection to the earth (but of course this is your choice, you do you)
