Works by the The Studio 18 Collective
Reception: December 2nd, 6-9pm The visual artist, like the writer or composer, often works in solitude. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, we crave the company of fellow artists to learn from, share inspiration, and test out ideas. The Studio 18 Collective formed in the spring of 2020. As artists, we felt the isolation of the shutdown as keenly as almost anyone. Despite the public health restrictions, it seemed apparent that we could, with appropriate precautions, meet and work outdoors, together. We began to sketch and paint in outdoor spaces in Merchantville, NJ, the home of Studio 18. As the summer progressed, we moved our sessions to various parks around Camden County. We continued to meet once or twice a week, until the cold weather forced us to discontinue. But we were right back at it in the spring of 2021. Our plein-air sessions were about having the opportunity to meet, work, talk and, perhaps most importantly, have a good time in the face of the isolation and socio-political turmoil swirling around us. We did not meet to defy restrictions or make a political statement. We met to work and cope; that may be the only statement necessary. We would like to thank our excellent models, Bernadette, Meg, Liz and Steph, without whose creativity, patience and humor we never would have been able to proceed. |
